Our Exhibit

Come take a "Walk in the Woods" through Flat Rock Brook's habitats—indoors!

Flat Rock Brook's exhibit is an in-depth exploration of Flat Rock Brook's habitats: forest, meadow, pond, stream and watershed. Learn about the birds that are year-round residents or those that migrate through Flat Rock Brook. Our exhibit is designed to enhance your appreciation and understanding of the plants and wildlife found in our 150-acres.

Our exhibit is home to our eastern box turtles as well as our aquatic turtles and fish. Our aquatic turtles and fish are housed in a 500 gallon aquarium which is designed to mimic the animals’ natural habitat.

Now offered in the exhibit room is a lovely reading nook! This pond-themed nook is the ideal place to gather children and enjoy quiet time reading stories and playing games. This is a beautiful place to feel like you’re outdoors when the weather may keep you in.

Summer Hours: Our Exhibit Room is closed to the public weekdays from 8:00 - 3:00 for summer camp. Please visit us from 3:00 - 5:00 Monday through Friday or over the weekend.

Animal Ambassadors

Flat Rock Brook cares for a number of animal ambassadors that assist naturalists in teaching about wildlife. Our turtles and fish are on display in the exhibit room so be sure to check them out when you stop in!

Other critters, such as our frog, gecko and snakes may not be on permanent display, but instead go to programs with our naturalists!

Flat Rock Brooks animal ambassadors include eastern box turtles, a red-eared slider, painted turtle, White’s tree frog, leopard gecko, two corn snakes and pumpkinseed sunfish.

Birdfeeders

feeders 2020.jpg

Just outside of our exhibit room windows you’ll see an array of birdfeeders. We keep these feeders stocked October through April. You’ll notice a variety of birds such as woodpeckers, chickadees, nuthatches and finches. Having trouble identifying the birds you see? There are identification tools right by the window so you can quickly learn what birds you’re seeing!

We offer birds a variety of seeds and nuts so that every species that frequents our feeders can find the most appropriate food for them.

There are also a number of bottles hung along the string. Those prevent squirrels from snacking at the bird feeders. They are very crafty but haven’t figured this trick out yet!

We get our seed from Wild Birds Unlimited in Paramus, NJ. Wild bird seed and suet are also available at grocery stores, big box stores and online.

Patio

Our patio was updated in the summer of 2019. New bluestone pavers were installed, giving the space a uniform look that matches our pathways. New picnic tables and a retractable awning were added which provide a shady gathering area during summer months. This area is a meeting point for school groups and for visitors. It is also a popular spot to enjoy a lunch before or after a hike!

All the benches surrounding the patio are new as well. The beloved bench built in memory of previous Flat Rock Brook Office Manager Barbara Schlossberg, was completely refurbished and painted. New benches were custom designed and built by our Land Manager. These benches border the patio space and expand seating. They also have built-in planters for seasonal flowers and plants.

Visitors are welcome to use and enjoy this space! Any groups larger that 10, however, do require a Group Use permit.

The update to our patio was made possible by generous donations made by our supporters. Flat Rock Brook wishes to thank and acknowledge The Bergen County Open Space Fund, Cynthia Sumner, Richard & Leslie Oram, and George & Carolyn Milne for their signficant gifts to this project.
